SUMMARY:A City at Work - at the Carnegie-Stout library
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, December 1 at 2:00 p.m.\, stop by the Carnegie-Stout Public Library for a free event that combines photography with local history. \nEnjoy a presentation from Dubuque photographer Tim Olson\,  Mike Gibson from the Center for Dubuque History\, and Kristin Anderson-Bricker\, professor of history at Loras College. \nThey will discuss two new books: \nA City at Work\, Dubuque 1912 by Tim Olson and Mike Gibson\, features essays about and prints from a collection of glass plate negatives taken in 1912 and housed in the Loras College Center for Dubuque History. A photography exhibit will also be held at the Dubuque Museum of Art in January 2020. \nA City at Work: Dubuque\, 2012 by Tim Olson contains his photos of the same locations 100 years later. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Mark Hirsch at Inspire Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Mark Hirsch will speak at Inspire Cafe in the Historic Millwork District on Thursday\, November 8\, 2018\, as part of  the Inspiring People Series. He will share “Shades of Wisdom” about the lessons he learned from photographing That Tree. \nWhile recovering from a car accident\, Hirsch spent a year taking daily smartphone photos of a Burr Oak tree in rural Platteville.  His work was initially featured in Voices from the Warehouse and then found success in many other exhibitions. \nHe published a book of photography\, That Tree\, and has gone on a successful speaking tour. He’s been interviewed for a number of national media outlets\, such as CBS News (click here for story).  Formerly a staff photographer for the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald\, Hirsch is a freelance photographer.
